Botanical name: Mangifera sylvatica    Family: Anacardiaceae (Cashew family)

Himalayan Mango is a tree, 9-12 m tall, with ash-grey or silvery bark. Leaves are simple, alternate, spirally arranged; leaf-stalks about 1-2 cm long; blade about 9-23 x 4-6.5 cm, elliptic-oblong, wedge-shaped at base, notched at tip, entire, thinly leathery. Flowers are borne at branch-ends, in panicles about 10-12 cm long; bisexual flowers about 4 mm across; flower-stalk about 3 mm long; sepals 4, about 3 x 1 mm; petals 4, about 4 x 1.8 mm, with 4-5 prominent ridges, confluent at base; disc 4-lobed, cup-shaped, fleshy, about 1.5 mm in diam.; stamens 4, 1 fertile, about 2.5 mm long, rest 3 short, teeth-like, sterile. Fruits are about 2.5 x 1.7 cm, ovate, tip somewhat pointed. Himalayan Mango is found in Nepal to NE India, China and Indo-China, at altitudes of 600-1900 m. Flowering: April-May.
